Jamdani Jewels started its journey with the aim of
introducing new designs in the JAMDANI world. Though there are over a
hundred traditional designs, and they are all beautiful, why should we
need to creat new designs? I have been faced with this question many a
times. My answer, sadly, the JAMDANI industry is on the decline. The
hard-working, highly skilled weavers are finding it difficult to keep
the tradition of their forefather's alive. They do not find it feasible
to enter into a profession that pays so little for so much work. As
such they are moving towards more lucrative professions. With fewer and
fewer skilled weavers, an unstable market and lack of greater state
patronage, the danger of losing this rich piece of heritage forever is
very real. This, as a patriot, worries me. I fear we are not only loosing
an age old tradition but also an intrinsic part of our national
heritage.
The recent trend is to embellish a finished piece of
JAMDANI with embroidery, cut-work etc. This is neither a creation nor
does it add to the ancient skill of cloth making in Bengal and Dhaka
which dates back to the early 4th century.
Recognizing that our weaver's brain is as astute and as sharp as a
mathematician's, I started my sketching. Previously nothing was sketched
or outlined. The weavers just know the exact number of times to do a
certain stich to combine the yarn to come up with a particular motif.
The main peculiarity of JAMDANI work is the geometric design. Keeping
that in mind JAMDANI JEWELS sarees mostly are of geometric, plants and
floral patters designs which originates from PERSIAN and MUGHAL fusion
thousands of years ago.
Each of Jamdani Jewels design have different names according to the
sketch. For instance, MRIGONOYONI. BAGANBILASH, PHULLESHARI. SHAGARBELA.
AMROPALI, GOLAPGUCHO, SHONDHAMONI, JHUMKOJOBA, CHOUPOL, SHAGAR,
URMIMALA and many more. At the same time, my efforts are to revive the
traditional JAM-DANI designs also.
Due to the exquisite exclusive design, and, specially the 'ONE PIECE' of
it's kind policy, Jamdani Jewels is well known amongst the discerning,
elegant women who wears the saree only on special occasions with exclusive jewellery. You don't
need to own 10 JAMDANIS. Own one, but an exclusive one.
